Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to a few frequently asked questions (FAQs). Should you not find the answers you require in the FAQs below then please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What should I bring for the day?

First and foremost you will need your camera, a DSLR or CSC (Compact System Camera) enabling you to change the aperture and shutter speed settings or a high quality compact camera, would be ideal. In addition, a tripod is essential and can be used with both DSLR and compact cameras. If you don’t have a tripod and would like advice on them, please contact one of your tutors. For DSLRs, a wide-angle lens is best for landscape photography – this doesn’t necessarily have to be ultra wide but anywhere between 17-80mm would be advantageous. Longer lenses may also be useful – for picking out details across a a valley, for instance.

Useful extras for DSLRs include:
Shutter release cable (you can use the self timer on your camera if you don’t have one)
We don’t tend to use many filters but if you have them a polariser or ND (neutral density) filter may come in handy.
We also encourage that if you have a new toy or accessory (camera related!) please bring it along and we will show you how to get the best out of it.

Please note that the workshops involve walking at varying distances and gradients and you are required to carry your own kit. There is always a possibility of rain so waterproof clothing, sturdy walking boots and protection for your electrical equipment are very much recommended.

You will also need to bring a picnic lunch and your own drinking water.

What happens in poor weather?

Since 2011 when we started to run the workshops we have only ever cancelled one workshop due to a few feet of snow!! We have been out in all types of weather and we often hope for bad weather as this gives us the best light with dramatic skies. Please dress appropriately and bring the necessary means to protect your gear in the event of wet weather.

Can I bring a film camera?

Absolutely – even though we are now in a digital age, there is nothing like using a film camera. Both Sam and Mark started off using film, and Mark has much experience in medium format and large format (5×4). We would ask that if you are bringing along a film camera, that its even more important to bring along a tripod so we can help with composition skills.

How long does a typical workshop day last?

The day starts relatively early (between 9 and 10am depending on the tour) with a kick-start cup of tea or coffee and introductions from your tutors. We then head out into the field and are away most of the day, depending on weather, locations and group fitness. The time we return depends very much on the time of year but we hope to get back to our starting point somewhere around 6-7pm. Full itinerary details will be given once you have booked, but you can call us for details any time.

Do I need to be super fit?

Certainly not super fit, but average fitness would be good. Sam and Mark enjoy walking and the tours reflect that in the way they have been devised as circular routes. We do not provide transport from location to location. We are out for the whole day but there are of course plenty of breaks for photography and lunch. On average, 3-4 hours will be spent walking and the rest with the camera.

Do I need insurance?

Sadly, we don’t cover your equipment should it get damaged or broken for any reason, so insuring your own kit is essential. We recommend that you have travel insurance should you be unable to attend the workshop at the last minute.

Can I cancel my trip once I have paid?

We understand that often plans can change, so in the event that you are unable to honour your booking we can offer refunds as follows:

Cancellation 45 days prior to the trip – full refund (less non-refundable PayPal fees)
Cancellation 30 days prior to the trip – half-refunded
Cancellation 15 days prior to the trip – quarter-refunded

Any bookings cancelled 14 or less days prior to the tour date cannot be refunded.

Alternatively, if your plans change 15 or more days prior to the trip and you are interested in transferring your booking to another of our tour dates, we may be able to arrange this subject to availability.
